This Japan Open Café will discuss perspectives from Japan on this decision: how did the media, politicians and citizens respond? How is sustainability as a topic developing in Japan? And how is Japan collaborating internationally to mitigate the effects of climate change?
Two speakers will provide their views on these questions.

About the speakers

Takahide Suzuki is an independent journalist, as of last year based in Leiden and familiar with Japanese society. He will provide us with some insight into the reactions in Japan about Trump’s decision to withdraw the US from the Paris Agreement. What were the general responses in the media, amongst politicians and how do Japanese citizens view this in light of the efforts in their own country?

Koos Wieriks currently works as a Strategic Advisor Water Management for the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. Over the past decades he has held many different governmental advisory positions both within the Netherlands and internationally. He is a notable specialist on water, infrastructure and the environment. He has also been closely involved with projects related to Japan, working with the Japanese government and the Crown Prince on water management. Mr. Wieriks is sure to bring a unique perspective on the cross-section of environmental issues and international politics.

For more detailed information about the speakers and updates about the programme check out our Facebook-event page, and while you’re there let us know if you will attend.
